WASHINGTON —The Food and Drug Administration approved two prescription medications to treat erectile dysfunction, one of which is Viagra, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service.
The new drug,, has a “silo effect” that can be used to treat more common conditions like high blood pressure and prostate issues. The new drugs are being developed by the company that makes the drug, Novartis.
“Our hope is that the FDA will approve these new drugs in a way that provides patients with the best possible results for treating erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Josephine Bechtold, the lead clinical investigator for the FDA’s product development program for Pfizer’s Viagra.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that affects millions of men worldwide, with millions of men having difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. While the number of men who suffer from ED is on the rise, the condition is also becoming more prevalent in the United States.
“Our hope is that this new drug will help improve our health and that it may help lower the costs of men who are facing the health issue of erectile dysfunction,” Bechtold said. “The FDA has already approved a number of other new drugs that are being studied and developed.”
Viagra, the first of a new class of drugs to treat ED, works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra, developed by Pfizer in 1998, has been on the market since 2003. It is also used as an alternative treatment for pulmonary hypertension, a high blood pressure that’s often linked to ED.
